Joshua Ashurst, sone of John N and Mary Adkints Huston Ashurst, was born about 1841 in Bath, Mason County, Illinois.  He enlisted in Company M, 2nd Illinois Cavalry, in the Union Army on August 18, 1862.  His unit fought in several major battles against the Confederate Army.  According to military records from his unit, he contracted camp diarrhea in January, 1863 and died September 21, 1863 at Fort Pillow, Tennessee as a result of that infection.  His burial place is unknown.
